June 30, 1955 - May 24, 2008

Nilda Perez, age 52, of Erie, found peace after a valiant 7 year, 4 month and 24 day battle. She was supported by her loving and devoted husband of 33 years, Jose Perez, until she went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 24, 2008. Nilda was born June 30, 1955 in Utuado, Puerto Rico, the daughter of Leonardo Serrano Torres of Utuado, PR and Pilar Rodriguez of Erie.

Nilda was a member of San Juan United Methodist Church. She received an Associate Degree in Child Development and was first employed with the East Coast Migrant Head Start Program based at Mount St. Benedict. She then worked through GECAC as a Drug & Alcohol Counselor at the Hispanic American Council and then as a Service Representative at Social Security Administration. Nilda was a Nominee for the Women's Roundtable Woman of the Year and received the Golden Apple Teacher Award in 1994. She loved fishing, traveling with her family and cooking.

Besides her husband and parents, survivors include three children, Maria Nilda Perez (fiancÚ', Craig Wilfong), Javier Perez (girlfriend, Karie Caldwell) and Jose Luis Perez (girlfriend, Patricia Ford); two brothers, Luis Alberto Serrano (Irma) and Jose Luis Serrano (Carmen); four sisters, Nivia Serrano-Caraballo (Benjamin), Elizabeth Claudio (Sergio), Gertrudis Serrano (Wilson) and Zoraida Claudio (Juan); 10 grandchildren, Javier, Jesus, Jose Manuel, Adlin, Anthony, Alanna, Da'Zhon, Amilio, Joshua and Elijah; many nieces, nephews and loving friends.

Friends called at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., East, 2607 Buffalo Road on Monday and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and attended a Funeral Service at San Juan United Methodist Church on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Nilda was laid to rest in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
