Reflections from Ray: May 2013

Most of us have some favorite passages of Scripture that we have applied to our lives many times, and we can probably quote them in full. One of my favorite is:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight"
~ Proverbs 3: 5-6
 I try to live my life by that credo of responsibility, self-control, and mature self-reliance. Those sound like commendable things, and yes, being responsible is a very good thing. Yet I might reach a point where I trust more in myself than in God, and that is when I am in danger of spiritual shipwreck. There are two huge temptations I have found lurking.

 One temptation is PRIDE, an unhealthy arrogance that generally sneaks in but then roars into my thinking when things are going great in my life. Then I tend to think that yes, I am in control of my little world.

The second temptation is DESPAIR that works into my heart whenever I am experiencing the inevitable setbacks or difficulties or discouragements of life. There is so much in life that is outside my control, such as illness, an economic downturn, or quirks in relationships.
