Reflections from Ray  ~  June  2014

This year Pentecost is the second Sunday of June. Acts 2 tells how all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” Acts 2 describes mighty acts of God that are both amazing and perplexing. It is not enough to just accept what others have told us about Christianity. We need to find our way through our own experience. John Wesley took the three-legged stool of Anglicanism: Scripture, reason, and tradition – and he added a fourth leg as a basis for our religious authority: experience. This is often called the Wesleyan quadrilateral. Our heritage emphasizes to think and let think.
Our exploration of faith takes time for reflection. I believe that one of the really disturbing features of our contemporary culture is the expectation of immediate gratification – that we can have whatever we want whenever we want it. Our 24 / 7 world demands instant access. Mature and seasoned theology is not like prepackaged meals that we zap in the microwave. It is more like gourmet cooking where the meal starts from scratch and contains all sorts of wonderful herbs and spices.
We need to take time to explore the meaning of our experiences of God. Certainly we will be both amazed and perplexed. But more important than that, we will find a deeper satisfaction in our quest to fill our spiritual hunger. Yielding to the temptation to find easy and convenient answers, we often miss the point. Some sneer at the questions being asked because they desire a quick conclusion. It is not all that neat and tidy. We cannot reduce God to a manageable force. This year’s theme for Annual Conference is “Drawn Deeper.”
God thwarts our expectations and explodes our prejudices. God does not just fit into our programs or our finances, or our long-range plans. Pentecost is about us getting into God’s work in the world, not about getting God into our work. My prayer is that God will surprise us and forgive us for our cynicism and conformity and keep us open to the working of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
