Gathering Hymn      “He Has Made Me Glad”    TFWS #2270

Lighting of Advent Candle of Hope

Leader:   As this season of “sparkle and bright” unfolds before us, the glimmering promises of hope lie like boxed jewels awaiting an adoring light.

People:  May we hold fast to hope’s patient possibilities.

Leader:   May we lift them high that they might catch the light of our dreams and shine bright in our broken world. And may we instill hope’s challenge in the hearts of our children that they, too, will live it into meaning--pouring their lives, as we do ours, into making it real--
for themselves, for each other, for the world.

              (Light candle of Hope)

People:  May Hope light the world this Christmas.

*Hymn of Response                       UMH #211 (verses 1 and 2)

“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”

Invocation (Unison)

Leader:   O God, we confess it is too easy to be a naysayer rather than a beacon of hope. We regret the times when we have joined a chorus of negativity and despair rather than a chorus lifting up words of comfort and hope. In this time of looking forward, grant us the grace to look forward with hope.

People:  May this Candle of Hope be lit in our hearts that we might bring hope to those who are living through dark times. We ask this in the name of the child who is to come giving hope to all. Amen.

Praises, Joys and Concerns

Pastoral Prayer and Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth,
as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,

the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
